You may have seen or heard about pelvic physiotherapists or women’s health physiotherapists and wondered what they do and why you would need to see one. If this is you, read on to find out if pelvic physiotherapy is something that could benefit you.
Many people think that pelvic floor symptoms such as leaking urine, rushing to the toilet or a feeling of heaviness in the pelvis is a normal part of being a woman. However, pelvic health physiotherapists like us believe that “just because symptoms are common, it doesn’t mean they are normal”.
If you are experiencing symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction, please remember it is not normal and the good news is that pelvic physiotherapy can help.
The types of symptoms that pelvic physiotherapy can help include:
- Leaking of urine
- Feeling a sense of urgency to get to the toilet on time
- Going to the toilet multiple times during the day or night
- A feeling of heaviness, dragging in the pelvis or a bulge in your vagina
- Difficulty emptying your bladder
- Painful sex
- Pelvic pain conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis vaginismus
- Constipation or pain emptying your bowels
- Pelvic, buttock or tailbone pain
So, when is the best time to see a pelvic health physiotherapist?
- If you have any of the above symptoms
- If you are pregnant
- If you have had a baby, we can see you any time after 6 weeks
- During the peri-menopausal or post-menopausal phase
- Before and/or after gynecological surgery
It can feel daunting to seek help for pelvic floor issues. Many people don’t get help as they think nothing can be done or are too embarrassed. At Liberty Pelvic Physio we strive to create a warm, welcoming environment where you can feel comfortable sharing your concerns and your symptoms. There are many treatment options available, so we urge you to find the courage to book in, send us a message or give us a call. Most patients feel like a huge weight has been taken off by finally being able to discuss ‘private’ issues with a health professional.
